Create a Modern Quilt Block
Quilt squares are an inexhaustible playground for those of us who love color and pattern. The simple 4x4 quilt block provides a mountain of pattern inspiration and myriad of design possibilities.
In this workshop we will learning how to prepare, cut, and sew a simple half-triangle block. We will then explore the design possibilities and, once a design has been decided upon, sew up the 4x4 quilt block. The final design will be ready for quilting, or sewing into a cushion cover, or creating a wall hanging. The end result is up to you. Different binding and finishing techniques will be discussed.
Materials: Students are invited to bring fabrics of their choice to use in this workshop (enough to cut (16) 6 inch squares). One suggestion is to bring 3 fabrics of similar color but varying in shade (i.e. light, medium, and dark blue) and one fabric that is quite different (such as a patterned piece or a brightly colored piece). About ½ yard of each of the 4 fabrics should give you plenty to work with. We will also have plenty of fabric for you to choose from and explore. A rotary cutter and cutting mat (if you have them), pencil, ruler, and sewing machine.
Take away: A patchwork cushion top ready to be made up, quilted or used as part of a larger piece.
Level: Beginner / Advanced Beginner / Intermediate. It's helpful if you know how to sew a straight seam.
