Introduction to Indigo and Shibori
In this Introduction to Indigo & Shibori Workshop students will learn the building blocks of dyeing with indigo and the fundamentals of an age-old shibori pattern-making process.
We will explore a wide variety of stitched, bound, and clamped resist techniques traditionally used to create patterns on cloth with indigo. As an inspirational springboard, we will start off with a bit about the fascinating history of indigo and the diverse historical techniques used around the world, and some of the very cool & innovative contemporary work out there. Students will then be guided through the start of their own projects. Everyone will have a chance to stitch, bind, and clamp to their heart’s content before dyeing their pieces in the indigo dye vats.
Each student will receive sample fabric to work with but feel free to bring fabric along if you have particular pieces that you’d prefer to work with. Plant based fibers (cotton, ramie, linen, hemp, flax, rayon) work best with the indigo dye but silk also can produce good results.
All printing and dyeing materials will be provided. Workshop limited to 20 participants.
